Sports injuries

Physiotherapy aids the restoration of movement, function and strength during recovery. Rehabilitation specific to your sport will assist an early return to activity.

Sports related injuries benefit from early intervention; this prevents an acute injury from becoming chronic and helps to ensure that further problems do not arise.

Leeds physiotherapy Clinic offers assessment and treatment of sports injuries from the initial acute stage through to the final rehabilitation. All levels of athletes can be catered for from elite to recreational.

Ankle Sprains
Knee ligament / Cartilage Injury
Patello-Femoral (Knee Cap) Problems
Overuse Running Injuries
Direct Injury from Contact Sport
Shoulder Pain from Throwing / Overhead Activity

Biomechanical Assessment of Overuse Injury

Back, neck and shoulder pain

The majority of spinal complaints are not serious and have a “mechanical” origin. Physiotherapy offers hands on treatment for specific problems, tailored exercise plans and effective advice for self-management and future prevention.

Posture related complaints
Acute joint problems
Chronic (long term) problems
Degenerative conditions (spondylosis, arthrosis)
Sacro-iliac Joint (SIJ) dysfunction

RSI (repetitive strain injury)

RSI is a term that describes a collection of conditions resulting from overuse of individual tissues. Management involves treatment of the local source of symptoms, but more importantly correcting the origin and nature of the overuse, to provide effective preventative care.

Pain and problems arising from any repetitive activity
Work related
Hobby related
Postural Pain syndromes

Whiplash

Whiplash Injuries occur when high or low velocity forces are absorbed by the spine and represent a painful condition, often when no tissue damage is endured. Early intervention and advice is optimal in aiding a full recovery.

Often receiving only an assessment and a few treatments helps to reduce pain, restore function and aid self-management.

Spinal Conditions

Physiotherapists are skilled in the diagnosis of musculo-skeletal problems, allowing problem specific management. The focus of which is reduction of pain, restoration of function and long-term prevention.

Degenerative conditions (spondylosis, arthrosis)
Spondylolisthesis
Instability
Disc related pain
Nerve root irritation / compression (arm / leg pain, pins and needles, numbness)
Ankylosing Spondylitis

Joint Problems

A common perception of conditions such as arthritis is that they are untreatable and must be lived with. Specific exercises are proven to aid improvement of both pain and function, limiting the progression of degeneration.

Pain relief may be gained by treatments such as exercises, mobilisations, heat / ice and acupuncture.

Arthritis
Rheumatism / Rheumatoid Arthritis
Direct Trauma

Bone Fractures

Fractures or “breaks” require specific management, often involving immobilisation in cast or splints. On removal, physiotherapists assess individual problems and aid the early return of function and strength through specific rehabilitation.

To aid the healing process
Early restoration of normal function
Prevention of secondary complications

Posture

Many painful conditions result from prolonged static positions and therefore stresses placed on the body. Management of acute symptoms and advice / exercise promotes long-term prevention.

Assessment of posture related problems
Advice on ergonomics / work station management / lifting etc.
Exercise and activity modification

Back Pain in pregnancy

In addition to the direct body stress of pregnancy, hormonal changes may result in conditions related to fluid retention and increased laxity of ligaments. These self-correcting changes can be eased by treatment during pregnancy.

Back problems related to increased ligament laxity
Sacro-iliac joint pain
Pelvic dysfunction
Carpal tunnel and nerve compression syndromes
